It was a long time before the first western students of Pattabhi Jois realized that the Sanskrit words he was saying through class were numbers! Ekam inhale, Dve exhale, Trini inhale … their teacher was counting their movements with breath. You see, that’s not how they originally learned to practice. Because traditionally and still today, the series is taught individually by a teacher, with each pose allowed to be fully developed before being taught the next. We call this self-practice or the Mysore method. But there is enormous benefit for both mind and body by practicing the movements in a led counted style, emphasizing the vinyasa. The intention is to lead students toward a more balanced practice through a series they are already familiar with. And why this class is intended for students who have had exposure to the Ashtanga practice, though do not necessarily need to be proficient.
Class time devoted to lecture: Less than 5 minutes
Branded Style: Ashtanga Dispatch
